AbstractThe improvement of spatial and radiometric resolution in satellite images has introduced some challenges in urban remote sensing. Due to the large spectral variation in urban areas, the most important of these challenges is to obtain a proper distinction among different urban targets. The traditional algorithms of classification with per-pixel approach have not been successful in this purpose. Hence, tests of new methods are required. This paper presents a comparison between two methods: MAXVER, a traditional per-pixel approach, and the oriented object analysis, a region-based approach. The latter method has the advantage of using not only spectral attributes, but also geometrical and relational attributes for the classification. An IKONOS image of Esplanada, a neighborhood of São José dos Campos (SP, Brazil), was used in the experiments.
